Emerging Americana singer-songwriter Matthew Thomas was on track to enjoy all the trappings of a garden variety suburban youth. Then he picked up a guitar. The rest has been a relatively straight line until recently. After quitting his full-time job in 2022, he finds himself on the outskirts of Indianapolis with his wife and dog.
The guitar is still in his hand, but the songs carry a different weight these days. They have to because they’re all he has. Since then, he has channelled his full emotions, hopes, and experiences into his music. Having fronted nationally touring pop-rock bands and collaborated with Grammy-winning producers, Thomas's true calling became evident when he embarked on a journey to discover his own musical identity and what he wanted his songs to actually sound and feel like - leading to his solo project being birthed in 2021.
With the successful funding of a Kickstarter campaign, he introduced his first EP, ‘Mustangs & Thoroughbreds, Vol. 1.’ This collection of songs explored the tension between who we are and who we aspire to be, weaving a narrative of saints and sinners, vagabonds and the virtuous, further showcasing his artistry as a genuine catharsis that captures the emotional landscapes of his journey with beautifully acoustic-led songs.
Now in 2023, Matthew sets to release ‘Mustangs & Thoroughbreds, Vol. 2’. At the heart of the EP is the poignant single ‘The Waiting Room’, a hopeful yet tragic love song set in rural America. Blissful folk and Americana sounds fill the air in this beautifully presented track, where Matthew unleashes his pop-woven melodies with enchanting acoustics and resonating lyricism, showing clear signs of a singer-songwriter who knows exactly what he wants to say and how he wants to say it.
Matthew says "The Waiting Room was intended to be a hopeful song of mourning I wrote for my wife last year in the wake of our first miscarriage. Fast forward to this past July and we went through another miscarriage. It was heartbreaking. I'm a sucker for the silver linings but this song is a reminder to me that sometimes the best thing we can do is embrace the struggle and just love crap out of each other. I don't think I've believed in the message of a song I've written more than this one."
For fans of Drew Holcomb & The Neighbours, Ruston Kelly and Jon Foreman, Matthew Thomas shines through in 'The Waiting Room', in a song inspired by personal experiences and a message to remind us all to embrace the struggles of life and to find solace in the love and support we offer each other.
